Chiado District and Camoes Square Lisbon

A view of the sun setting over a city over Luís de Camões Square

Beautiful Chiado in Lisbon, Portugal is our favorite neighborhood in one of our favorite cities and countries in the world.

This historic city center district includes several top tourist attractions on every visitor’s Lisbon itinerary.

However, Chiado’s quaint cobblestone streets are beloved not only by visitors but also by locals.

Chiado is a real neighborhood with grocery stores, shops, and services essential for residents.

It’s a place where Lisbon’s fine-dining restaurants share the same block as casual local eateries. Where traditional Portuguese cuisine and the native Portuguese language receive equal appreciation.

Chiado’s most prominent public square is Luis de Camões Square (Praça Luis de Camões), honoring the national Portuguese poet.

Camoes’ 16th-century masterpiece The Lusiads (Os Lusiadas) regales you with epic and exciting tales from Portuguese history.

His 19th-century square then enchants you with elegance and vitality. From the monumental 1897 statue and ornate Portuguese pavement (calcada portuguesa) to the 28 tram rumbling past happy crowds.

Chiado Camoes Apartments, Lisbon Best Apartments

Filling a rather unique accommodation category, Chiado Camoes Apartments are versatile “aparthotels” – that is, vacation apartments that are fully equipped with home-style elements AND also are fully serviced with housekeeping and hotel-style amenities.

On the one hand, we adore boutique hotels, especially family-owned and operated properties.

On the other hand, we prefer to travel like locals – shopping in local markets, cooking at home, and drinking coffee in local cafes.

So, aparthotels are often great options in hospitality, combining together the best of both worlds.

Location

Commanding a highly coveted spot, Chiado Camoes Apartments holds a premier central location and prime corner right on Luis de Camoes Square (Praça Luis de Camões).

The building entrance is on Rua da Gáveas, a quiet cobblestone lane around the corner from the bustling square.

First Impressions

Two photos of the decor inside the Chiado Camoes Apartments

Firstly, the heritage building itself makes a memorable first impression. Not only is the site on the square exceptional, but also its exterior is eye-catching.

Traditional blue and white azulejos – painted and glazed ceramic tiles, part of the signature patterns of Portugal – completely cover the facade.

Secondly, memorable first impressions continue inside. When a courteous representative of the hospitality management team welcomes you and introduces the apartment features.

During our stay, staff were available by mobile 24 hours to answer any questions and provide any assistance. We found staff to communicate promptly, responsively, and easily in English.

Additionally, let’s not neglect to mention housekeeping, undoubtedly the hardest job in hospitality. The housekeepers at Chiado Camões Apartments are commendable in maintaining an immaculate apartment!

Accessibility

Circa late 18th or early 19th century, following the 1755 Great Lisbon Earthquake, the heritage building has been fully restored and renovated to offer step-free access for guests.

One small half-step from the cobblestone streets, the building’s front entrance opens to a ground-floor foyer with a gleaming new modern elevator.

The elevator services the upper floors – and additionally, of course, there’s a staircase. The apartment interiors are also step-free.

Guest Rooms

We booked a Deluxe One-Bedroom Apartment, which feels airy and spacious with 646 square feet (60 m2). Located on the fourth floor, our particular end-unit apartment boasts a very narrow balcony.

The apartment front door opens to an entrance hallway with an elegant console table, area rugs, and coat hooks.

Painted in soft neutral hues with white architectural moldings and accents, the serene ambiance welcomes you to your Lisbon home away from home.

Great Room:

The Deluxe One-Bedroom floor plan, furniture layout, and design at Chiado Camoes Apartments offer an inviting vibe: Stylish, fresh, and upscale.

A compact fully-equipped kitchen lines one wall of the open-plan great room. Appliances include a stovetop, oven, microwave, refrigerator, dishwasher, and washing machine. Oh yes, and a Nespresso machine!

The great room features a dining table with chairs for four, a plush upholstered sofa – which converts to a sofa bed – as well as additional seating.

From the living room, two sets of French doors open to a tiny terrace – just wide enough to step out and savor breathtaking views over the square.

The apartment is soundproofed, with double-glazed windows and shutters to minimize noise. Additionally, the fact that the bedroom is down the hall means quiet and restful sleep.

Bedroom:

Speaking of the bedroom, it’s cozy and cute. The queen-size bed is quite comfortable. A built-in closet is nicely designed with lighting, hangers, and drawer space to unpack your luggage.

During the day, natural light floods the bedroom – although there’s no view from this room because spectacular views are in the living room! Later, shutters help keep the bedroom dark and peaceful at night.

Bathroom:

The marble bathroom features double sinks, ample storage, and a TV inset in the vanity mirror. Water pressure and temperatures in the walk-in shower are excellent.

Lastly, air conditioning and heating controls keep the apartment comfortable during all four seasons.

WiFi and Work Space

The free WiFi is outstanding at Chiado Camoes Apartments, with an Ookla speed rating of 59.9 Mbps.

During our stay, the free WiFi throughout the property maintained consistent speed.

Strong and steady WiFi is certainly a necessity not a luxury, because we work while traveling.

Likewise, we appreciate ample electrical outlets. Also, ambient and task lighting. As well as different spaces to stretch out and do serious work.

In short, Chiado Camões Apartments ticked all the boxes on the WiFi and workspace list.

Parking for Chiado Camoes Apartments

If you’re planning to drive in downtown Lisbon, then here’s some need-to-know travel info: There’s a public parking garage across the plaza from Chiado Camoes Apartments.

The Camoes Car Park (Parque Camões Telpark by Empark) is an underground parking garage directly underneath Praca Luis de Camoes.

This garage provides 340 spaces of covered parking for a maximum vehicle height of 6 feet (1.9 m).

The lighted facility offers advance reservations via the Empark app, electric vehicle charging stations, motorcycle spaces, and handicapped parking. Also, an elevator services the subterranean floors and street level.

The garage is open and accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Not surprisingly, parking fees are charged here and also at other Lisbon parking places.

Rumor has it there’s free parking nearby, but we’re not aware of its whereabouts. Because in truth, we rarely drive in the city center.

Instead, we walk and take the excellent Lisbon public transport everywhere with the Lisboa Card.
