Hi, we're Marilee and Paul

Paul is the photographer and FAA-credentialed drone pilot. Marilee is the voice and writer behind Spotlight Sojourns.

We're a married couple with a lifelong passion for good coffee and global travel.

Historians and archaeologists by education and training, we met abroad as solo travelers during university.

A promise long ago in Greece, and a transformational travel moment several years ago in Portugal, led us to this full-time travel life. And in turn, led you here.

What is slow travel

So, you may be wondering, "What is slow travel? Why does slow travel matter?"

We're so glad you asked, because those are two excellent questions indeed. And of course, we've got answers:

Slow travel is an overall travel concept rather than an official tourism category.

However, we essentially describe slow travel as an approach that’s intentional and thoughtful.

We specifically define slow travel as the:

  • Purpose to broaden horizons, create connections, and deepen understanding (our love language is experiences).
  • Passion to collect moments that echo in memory (moments > things).
  • Path to seek beauty and find joy, wherever you are (even if an armchair).
  • Perspective that WHY you go matters more than WHERE you go (must-visit list vs. a checklist).

Why slow travel matters

Slow travel involves more than the QUANTITY of trips, countries, or days on the road.

Instead, slow travel is chiefly about the QUALITY of your experiences, memories, and stories.

Above all, here's why slow travel matters:

Because slow travel is meaningful travel.

Meaningful travel is part of a meaningful life.

And stories enrich the meaning.

Speaking of stories, we’ve created an exclusive free resource for you. Our step-by-step guide helps you tell your travel story easily.
