Special Note: We’ve been on a years-long coffee journey around the world. It’s an ongoing quest to discover artisanal coffee roasters, independent coffee shops, and local cafes which focus on the craft of specialty coffee, in particular, Third Wave coffee.
Coffee fuels our travels on and off the beaten path. We specifically seek local gems and also take pilgrimages to legendary cafes. Our purpose is to share wonderful places, people, and stories with you. So that you, in turn, may travel the world, taste the coffee, and tell your own stories.
Coffee Shops in Saint Paul: A Quick Intro
In the 19th century, Mark Twain visited Saint Paul, Minnesota’s capital, Minneapolis, Minnesota’s largest city, and several small communities along the Mississippi River.
Mark Twain, the pen name of Samuel Clemens, chronicled his river journeys in his 1883 memoir and travel book, Life on the Mississippi.
Twain first traveled the Mississippi as a 21-year-old steamboat pilot trainee. Secondly, as a much-older author, humorist, and passenger on a steamboat cruise.
Twain appreciated “the newness, briskness, swift progress, wealth, intelligence, fine and substantial architecture, and general slash and glow, and energy” of the Twin Cities.
In a similar way that coffee was part of Twain’s 19th-century journey, the 21st-century coffee journey is a vital part of the Twin Cities Metropolitan Area.
The Twin Cities’ specialty coffee scene arguably traces its beginnings to 1992. That’s when Kim and John Puckett opened the Caribou Coffee original location in Edina, Minnesota.
Less than a decade later, the Third Wave Coffee movement arrived in the Twin Cities. In 2000, Christian Johnson founded Spyhouse Coffee Roasting Company in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Nowadays, both of these innovative Minnesota coffee companies are part of larger corporate entities.
From Twain’s heyday to modern days, coffee culture continues with “general slash and glow, and energy” in the Twin Cities and beyond.
Several leading coffee houses in Saint Paul have multiple locations throughout the Twin Cities Metropolitan Area.
You’ll find these noted in the following descriptions below and on our custom interactive map later in this guide.
Special Note: Our search for great coffee is always underway. Our must-visit list for future trips includes locals’ recommendations, e.g., Lowertown Bike Shop Coffee Station (the closest coffee to the St Paul European Christmas Market), Café Astoria, Catzen Coffee, and Port 2050 Coffee.
Best Coffee Shop in Saint Paul: Tact Coffee

One sunny morning, we decided to check out the mural scene in the Creative Enterprise Zone of Saint Anthony Park. Turns out, we made a wise decision.
When we spied a low-slung building emblazoned with the word COFFEE, we beelined across the parking lot.
Intrigued, we opened the door to Tact Coffee, opened in February 2026 by married entrepreneurs Moriah and Hayden.
Moriah and Hayden are both highly skilled artisans of specialty coffee and sincere connections. Indeed, “Tact” has two meanings in this instance:
- Tact, a noun which Merriam-Webster defines as “a keen sense of what to do or say in order to maintain good relations with others.”
- Tact, an acronym which stands for “Tea and Coffee Thoughtfully.”
The interior accommodates an impeccable La Marzocco espresso machine, roasting and wholesale operations, cozy cafe seating, and display shelves.
These delightful shelves showcase whimsical figurines, Lego collections, and curated merchandise.
Our first round of coffee was, in a word, superlative. Conversation and additional coffee subsequently followed. Each cup demonstrated consistent balance, tasteful nuance, and artful presentation.
The caliber of Moriah’s and Hayden’s coffee beans, beverages, and service rank with the finest we’ve had anywhere in the world.
It’s sophistication, yes, but with zero ostentation. Simply authentic expertise, confident craftsmanship, and neighborly spirit.
Hayden describes their entrepreneurial inspiration and intention for Tact Coffee to us via email:
“We have been in coffee for quite some time, and we’ve always found joy in the calm, serene environments that are welcoming and unassuming. The accessibility of coffee and coffee culture shouldn’t be complex or exclusive. We wanted to take a simplistic approach that recalls the profound feeling you get when you discover a joyful experience, i.e. a tasty coffee, for the first time. And our shop is a space where you can share that joy with others.” (Received by Marilee Kostadimas March 2026)
Calm. Serene. Joyful. In short, that aptly characterizes our experience at Tact Coffee.
In sum, Tact Coffee wholeheartedly receives our award as the best coffee shop in Saint Paul.
Address: Tact Coffee | 2386 West Territorial Road | St Paul, MN 55114
Coffee Shops in Saint Paul: Saint Anthony Park
The Saint Anthony Park district is located in northwest Saint Paul. Beautiful Langford Park serves as a neighborhood hub with verdant lawns, playgrounds, sports, and recreation amenities.
The district’s historic homes, mid-century houses, and contemporary lofts are home to families, professionals, and students at Luther Seminary and the University of Minnesota Saint Paul campus.
In addition, the Creative Enterprise Zone mentioned earlier brings makers, creators, and mural artists to Saint Anthony Park.
Dogwood Coffee Co.

Creativity and community distinguish Dogwood Coffee shops almost as much as their small-batch coffee beans.
Consider this Dogwood Coffee location on University Avenue, for example, across the street from the Metro Green Line light rail station.
Original artwork and vivid colors distinguish the delightful interior of Dogwood Coffee Saint Paul. Plus, natural light pours through floor-to-ceiling windows.
Various seating areas include the bar area, cozy nooks, and long banquettes. The different spaces invite individual work, quiet conversations, or small group discussions.
There’s also seasonal patio seating available in warmer months, and dogs are welcome outside.
Address: Dogwood Coffee Co. | 2700 University Avenue West | St Paul, MN 55114
(See our custom interactive map later in this guide for additional store locations)
Workhorse Coffee Bar

Established in 2013, Workhouse Coffee Bar is a popular neighborhood spot in the historic Saint Anthony Park commercial district.
The circa 1900s space features an original tin ceiling, exposed brick walls, and industrial-style tables and chairs.
Speaking of tables and chairs, each seat at every table was taken. Conversational buzz floated through the air. That’s terrific to see and hear.
The barista was in training, so we couldn’t properly evaluate the espresso caliber. For this reason, we plan another visit to Workhouse Coffee Bar.
Address: Workhorse Coffee Bar | 2399 University Avenue West | St Paul, MN 55114
SK Coffee
Single-origin coffee and singular interior designs are a hallmark of SK Coffee, a specialty coffee roaster headquartered in Saint Paul.
SK Coffee is beloved by baristas and locals in the Twin Cities and beyond. It’s also beloved by coffee aficionados like us.
Indeed, we’ve named SK Coffee Downtown Minneapolis as the best coffee in Minneapolis.
The Vandalia Towers location, a former mattress factory, includes both a retail coffee bar and the SK Coffee roastery operations. Here you’ll see and taste SK Coffee at its source.
Address: SK Coffee Bar and Roastery | 550 Vandalia Street | St Paul, MN 55114
(See our custom interactive map later in this guide for additional store locations)
Coffee Shops in Saint Paul: West Seventh
The mighty Mississippi River flows through Saint Paul’s West Seventh district, encompassing three smaller communities:
- West End
- Uppertown
- Irvine Park
West Seventh has always been a community, even before Saint Paul and Minneapolis were established.
In 1838, a one-eyed fur trader named Pierre Parrant, nicknamed “Old Pig’s Eye,” staked his claim here along the river.
Mr. Parrent was not only a fur trader, but also a bootlegger and “a person of dubious reputation,” to quote the National Park Service.
The infamous tavern, called “Pig’s Eye” or “Pig’s Brown Eye,” eventually led military authorities from nearby Fort Snelling to evict Mr. Parrent two years later.
Although Mr. Parrent and his settlement are long gone, West Seventh still remains a vital neighborhood with heritage architecture, trendy restaurants, cute shops, and great coffee.
Stepwise Coffee

Located on a quiet residential street, Stepwise Coffee is currently open only on Saturdays and Sundays from 8 am to 2 pm.
Several Saint Paul baristas told us that when they go out for coffee, they go to Stepwise Coffee.
Well, suffice it to say that after our visit, we agree.
Opened in 2023, Stepwise Coffee is a bright little cafe. Natural light pours through two large bay windows overlooking turn-of-the-century homes.
Even though it was busy, the owner, Dalton, took time for a quick chat while he skillfully prepared Paul’s cortado.
The quality of Stepwise Coffee definitely makes it worth timing your coffee journey around their opening hours.
Address: Stepwise Coffee | 893 Randolph Avenue | St Paul, MN 55102
Wildflyer Coffee

Since its start as a coffee cart in 2017, woman-owned Wildflyer Coffee has grown to two locations, one in Minneapolis and one in Saint Paul.
We found Wildflyer Coffee to be a colorful and friendly place. The cortado, our hallmark of barista craft, was nicely crafted.
Afterward, we learned of Wildflyer’s core mission as a non-profit organization. Wildflyer programs “provide life skills, job training and employment opportunities to youth experiencing homelessness”, reports the Daily Coffee News.
So, friend, when you visit the colorful Wildflyer Coffee for snacks, coffees, and signature drinks such as The Highlander, a brown sugar molasses latte, know this:
Your presence and purchases help make a difference for the community.
Address: Wildflyer Coffee | 1362 7th Street West | St Paul, MN 55102
(See our custom interactive map later in this guide for additional store locations)
Claddagh Coffee

How would we describe Claddagh Coffee? We’d say this Irish coffee shop is similar to an Irish pub: Friendly, fun, and filled with happy buzz.
Along with classic espresso and coffee drinks, the signature lattes are, obviously, top choices. Not to mention, the names on the chalkboard menu made us smile. For example:
- The Claddagh latte with Irish cream and dark chocolate
- O’Danny Boy latte with banana and dark chocolate
- Hot Molly latte with cayenne, cinnamon, and honey
So, come on over to Claddagh Coffee. Order a cuppa, pull up a stool, and feel like a neighbor. Because there are no strangers here, only friends you haven’t met yet.
Address: Claddagh Coffee | 459 7th Street West | St Paul, MN 55102
(See our custom interactive map later in this guide for additional store locations)
Coffee Shops in Saint Paul: West Side
First, to clarify, the West Side, the West End, and West Saint Paul are three different places:
- The West Side is a Saint Paul neighborhood located on the western bank of the Mississippi River.
- The West End is a section of another Saint Paul neighborhood, the West Seventh district described earlier.
- West Saint Paul is a suburban town in Dakota County, directly south of Saint Paul proper, on the western side of the Mississippi River.
Hopefully, that helps explain the occasionally confusing Saint Paul names. Otherwise, you’ll find our Saint Paul neighborhood map below.
Backstory Coffee Roasters

The West Side location of Backstory Coffee Roasters offers a markedly different mood than its North Loop location. After all, Backstory North Loop is undoubtedly the most beautiful cafe in Minneapolis.
West Side is the original location where Backstory’s story began in 2014 as an artisanal coffee roaster. Five years later, Backstory expanded this location to include a coffee bar.
Since then, Backstory could write a book on how to build a successful coffee business: From a bustling wholesale roastery to booming coffee subscriptions and thriving coffee shops.
We drank our excellent espresso while overlooking the open roastery operations. In warmer months, we suggest heading to the spacious patio to sip coffees, pour-overs, and cold brews.
Address: Backstory Coffee Roasters | 432 Wabasha Street South | St Paul, MN 55107
(See our custom interactive map later in this guide for additional store locations)
Coffee Shops in Saint Paul: Union Park
The Union Park district encompasses residences, small businesses, parks, churches, and schools across several smaller neighborhoods, for instance:
- Merriam Park
- Snelling Hamline
- Lexington-Hamline, otherwise known as Lex-Ham
Late 19th-century and early 20th-century architecture distinguishes the walkable streets of this urban neighborhood.
Schools and colleges, including Concordia University Saint Paul, enhance the historic ambiance and modern vitality of Union Park.
Yellowbird Coffee Bar

When we walked through the canary-yellow door into Yellowbird Coffee Bar in Lexington-Hamline, we straightaway felt its special sense.
Yellowbird Coffee Bar inspires a sense of gentle welcome. A sense of quiet warmth. And also, a sense of genuine community.
Because Yellowbird Coffee Bar is a true neighborhood coffeehouse. People of all ages and different walks of life gather here.
Conversations hum. Collaborations happen. And, of course, coffee flows as freely as a canary flies.
We found a cozy seating area in the back, with comfortably worn leather easy chairs around a low coffee table.
Barista Noor hand-crafted several coffees for us, including a cappuccino and a cortado. She also recommended the apple fritter from La Boulangerie Marguerite. In a word, yum!
Speaking of which, Yellowbird features exceptional purveyors such as:
- Freshly roasted beans from True Stone Coffee Roasters in Saint Paul
- Fresh-baked pastries from La Boulangerie Marguerite, established in 1921 in Saint Paul
- Fresh cream, skim, and whole milk from Autumnwood Farm in Forest Lake (stay tuned, more on Forest Lake coming up).
Seasonal drinks change, and local purveyors may differ at the time of your visit. Just check the hand-written chalkboard menu for the current offerings.
Address: Yellowbird Coffee Bar | 1168 Selby Avenue | St Paul, MN 55104
(See our custom interactive map later in this guide for additional store locations)
Luminary Coffeehouse

During an afternoon stroll in Merriam Park, we saw a cute coffee quote on a sandwich board outside Luminary Coffeehouse.
“Roses are red / Violets are blue / I want coffee / Do you?”
Why yes. Yes, we do, thank you.
We ordered two cappuccinos, then settled into a long pew bench lined with soft cushions.
Luminary Coffeehouse has an eclectic aesthetic that’s equally cozy, creative, and cosmic.
The cosmic connection is evident in Luminary’s logo and specialty drinks like the Lunar Latte, Solar Latte, and North Star.
All in all, Luminary Coffeehouse is a good-natured environment for wanderlusters, neighbors, and the occasional dog or two.
Address: Luminary Coffeehouse | 1562 Selby Avenue | St Paul, MN 55104
Coffee Shops in Saint Paul: Highland Park
The Highland Park district of Saint Paul is on the western bank of the Mississippi River, with historic Fort Snelling at its southernmost tip.
This community borders the neighborhoods of West Seventh, described previously, and Macalester-Groveland, described below.
Highland Park was once home to the Ford Motor Company Assembly Plant, operating from 1925 to 2011.
A historic bridge of Minnesota, the 1927 Intercity Bridge still spans the Mississippi River from Ford Parkway in Highland Park to 46th Street in Minneapolis.
Quixotic Coffee

Inspired by Cervantes’ fictional knight Don Quixote, who futilely tilted at windmills, the adjective quixotic means:
“Foolishly impractical especially in the pursuit of ideals … lofty romantic ideas or extravagantly chivalrous action.” (Merriam-Webster)
Quixotic Coffee is a place that pursues ideals, yes. But in purposefully practical, delicious, and indeed successful ways.
Quixotic Coffee offers a slate of tea, kombucha, and espresso drinks hand-crafted from Backstory Coffee beans. As well as a casual food menu of sandwiches, salads, and pastries.
White subway tiles, black wrought iron, rich woods, and marble accents create a quite romantic setting to rest your lance and relax in comfort.
There’s even a glass-walled, semi-private meeting room available for advance bookings. So you and a small group can plan chivalrous actions together.
Address: Quixotic Coffee | 769 Cleveland Avenue South | St Paul, MN 55116
Coffee Shops in Saint Paul: Macalester-Groveland
The Macalester-Groveland district, generally known as Mac-Groveland or Mac-Grove, is another past-meets-present Saint Paul neighborhood.
Mac-Groveland stretches from the Mississippi River to Summit Hill, a glorious Gilded Age neighborhood. Along the way, the Mac-Grove sidewalks pass 19th-century Victorian architecture, 20th-century pre- and post-war homes, and 21st-century contemporary construction.
Popular restaurants, bars, stores, and, yes, coffee shops fill the neighborhood’s commercial areas along Snelling Avenue and Grand Avenue.
Speaking of Grand Avenue, the impressive Art Deco marquee of Grandview Theater, dating from 1933, is a Macalester-Groveland landmark.
Roots Roasting

“Make good coffee.” Roots Roasting boldly declares its imperative in the window facing Snelling Avenue.
Let’s find out if this Saint Paul roastery and corner-store coffeehouse walks the talk.
Opened in 2018, Roots Roasting focuses on traditional coffee and espresso beverages. The cafe also serves fine teas, fun seasonal drinks, and fresh pastries from local bakeries.
The pared-down interior imparts a laid-back vibe. Casual environs notwithstanding, the barista crafted Paul’s classic cortado with attentive care.
In other words, yes, Roots Roasting walks the talk. They certainly make good coffee.
Address: Roots Roasting | 1552 Saint Clair Avenue | St Paul, MN 55105
Spyhouse Coffee Roasters

Since 2000, Spyhouse Coffee Roasters has led the Third Wave Coffee movement in the Twin Cities.
Its chic cafes dot Minneapolis and also, Rochester, Minnesota. Each individual cafe takes a site-specific approach to create a unique design-forward experience.
In 2017, Spyhouse opened the Snelling Avenue South location as its first Saint Paul coffeehouse.
The circa 1930s shop reflects old-fashioned charm with vintage-style lighting, bronze accents, marble countertops, and creamy hues.
We enjoy the vintage inspirations reminiscent of its former occupant, an antique store. We think you’ll enjoy it, too.
Address: Spyhouse Coffee Roasters | 420 Snelling Avenue South | St Paul, MN 55105
(See our custom interactive map later in this guide for additional store locations)
Coffee Shops in Saint Paul Suburbs
Let’s take an easy drive to some worthy cafes and coffee shops in Saint Paul’s suburbs and small towns.
The following coffeehouses are beyond Saint Paul’s city limits but within the Twin Cities Metropolitan Area.
Happy Monday and Company

At first glance, the large complex just off the I-35 W freeway seems better suited to a huge fitness center rather than a Third Wave Coffee shop.
Well, that’s because the vast building really was a huge fitness center before its transformation into a wonderful coffeehouse, Happy Monday and Company, in 2024.
When we walked into Happy Monday, smiles promptly creased our faces. Soaring ceilings, double-height windows, and a soft color palette create a cheerful environment awash in natural light.
Our cappuccino and flat white were both beautiful and delicious. Plus, the Hug in a Mug (mocha and cinnamon) surely must win a prize for cutest name.
By the way, the founders are potters, as well as coffee connoisseurs. Accordingly, the handmade pottery elevates food and beverage presentations and also enhances the retail selections.
The driving distance from downtown Saint Paul to Roseville is approximately 8 miles (13 km).
Address: Happy Monday & Co | 2420 Cleveland Avenue North | Roseville, MN 55113
Black Sheep Coffee Cafe

South Saint Paul is a suburban town in Dakota County. As its name implies, South Saint Paul lies south of the Minnesota capital city, which is in Ramsey County.
Black Sheep Coffee Cafe is locally-owned and family-friendly. It’s clearly a beloved community gathering spot, judging by the busy tables and happy customers.
They roast their own coffee beans and additionally bake their own pastries in-house. Yes, the scones looked a-mmm-azing!
We took a seat near the stone fireplace, a fabulous focal point in colder months. In warmer months, there’s patio seating and a walk-up service window outside.
The driving distance from downtown Saint Paul to South Saint Paul is approximately 7.4 miles (12 km).
Address: Black Sheep Coffee Cafe | 705 Southview Boulevard | South St Paul, MN 55075
MADE Coffee

Historic Stillwater, Minnesota, commands a strategic site on the St. Croix River bordering Minnesota and Wisconsin.
This romantic river town made news as the “Birthplace of Minnesota.” It’s popular with history buffs, outdoor enthusiasts, shoppers, and tourists alike.
Quaint bookstores, upscale shops, salons, eateries, and ice creameries line the sidewalks of the 19th-century Main Street.
MADE Coffee anchors the southern end of Main Street. This small full-service coffee shop is next to the Main Street stairs and next door to Lora, a swanky boutique hotel where we stayed.
Enjoy your to-go espresso, drip coffee, cold brew, and light bites fireside on Lora’s outdoor patio. Or hike up the stairway to the scenic hilltop overlooking the river.
The driving distance from downtown Saint Paul to Stillwater Lake is approximately 21 miles (34 km).
Address: MADE Coffee | 410 S Main Street | Stillwater, MN 55082
Coffeesmith

Forest Lake is known for scenic lakeshores spanning 15.71 miles (25 km) and for its lively exurban town surrounded by family farms.
In recent years, Forest Lake is also known for stellar specialty coffee at Coffeesmith, a one-of-a-kind Third Wave Coffee shop in a century-old home.
Opened in November 2021, Coffeesmith clearly conveys the owner’s labor of love for craftsmanship, coffee, and community.
Outside and indoors, you’ll find instagrammable photo ops aplenty to accompany wonderful coffees, teas, and treats.
You’ll ascend the stairs to a wrap-around porch with graceful white Ionic columns.
When set with tables and chairs in season, the porch is a picturesque spot for well-chilled beverages, like an iced Americano.
Polished original woodwork gleams against vintage tiles, marble counters, and ornate wallpaper. Elegant historic elements contrast with contemporary seating, sleek lighting, and vibrant colors.
The coffee menu offers a wide range of espresso drinks, pour-overs, seasonal specialties, and crowd-pleasing coffee flights.
Coffeesmith partners with premier local purveyors, including Autumnwood Farms, a family-owned dairy located in Forest Lake, and Duluth Coffee Company in Duluth, Minnesota.
Coffeesmith is, in truth, one of our favorite places to gather with family and friends. We invite you to make the coffee journey and experience this coffee destination for yourself.
The driving distance from downtown Saint Paul to Forest Lake is approximately 26 miles (42 km).
Address: Coffeesmith | 432 North Shore Drive | Forest Lake, MN 55025
